Gerard Hobson, Biography

Printmaker
Original linocuts

(b..) .

Since childhood, Gerard always had two great loves: wildlife and art. He graduated from Bangor University in 1985 as a zoologist and went on to become a botanist and later wildlife illustrator for the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

Following relocating up north, Gerard worked for Yorkshire Wildlife and continued to develop his work on a freelance basis. About 14 years ago he attended a printmaking course at York College and was particularly drawn to linocuts. Since then, he has developed his distinctive style of hand coloured lino prints from a studio space in his garden. In more recent years he has also turned his hand to woodcarving, further evolving and cementing his unique artistic identity. Gerard’s striking designs, bold use of colour and telling affection for British wildlife, swiftly established his reputation as a much-loved and highly collectable York artist.

The craftsmanship of lino printmaking is evident in every step of the process, making each print unique. Beginning with a sketch, Gerard will transfer his design onto a lino tile, then carve it out using specialist bladed tools. After, ink is applied using a roller and paper gently placed over the top, before the process of burnishing begins. Finally, Gerard finishes each print by hand, often adding additional colours and then hanging in the studio to dry.

Living and working in York for the best part of two decades, Gerard is a favourite amongst the city’s bustling printmaking scene, opening his garden studio each year as part of York Open Studios. Today, his work is exhibited throughout the UK, garnering a loyal and ever increasing following.
