The French Call it Tranquillité

by Kirsty Maclennan / Wednesday 27th of November, 2019

Peace is not something that is easy to come by in a bustling and demanding world, where there never seems to be time to stop and take stock. To feel the sun on your skin as it streams through the treetops or listen out for the crunch of frosted grass beneath your boots. To sit and share a glass of wine in a summer garden or bask in the sweetly smelling dusk of a rural sunset.

Regardless of where you live or how busy you find yourself day-to-day, the transportive power of art can gift you that most elusive requisite - tranquillity. Could there be any greater pleasure than closing the door on a grey and blustery day, to be greeted by the warming haze of David Sawyer’s, ‘Sunset Reflections, Grand Canal, Venice’? Or perhaps, in seeking solace and adventure, to gaze into the mysterious, snowy byways of Julian Mason’s ‘Winter Light’?

A piece of art can be a touchstone, an object through which daily worries are subsided, all quibbles washed away and, in their place, the gentle, reaffirming brushstrokes of a knowing artist. A painting is a window that opens out onto the landscapes of our imaginations, restful and inspiring in equal measure, there is nothing quite so tranquille as living with art.
