Dianne Flynn, Biography

British figurative artist
Original acrylic paintings

(b.1939-2024) Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England

Born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1939, Dianne Flynn embarked upon a celebrated career spanning nearly fifty years. After partaking in local art classes in her formative years, Dianne graduated from the Manchester School of Art in 1973 with a Diploma in Art & Design. She then went on to obtain an Art Teachers Certificate from Leeds Polytechnic Institute in 1974.

Following her studies, she left for France, living and painting in the Languedoc with fellow artist and husband to be, Paul Hedley. Dianne’s skill brought her to the attention of George Rowney & Co. who subsequently employed her as a demonstrator of watercolour, oil, acrylic and pastel techniques. Having first achieved success as a portrait painter, Dianne worked as a full-time artist from 1976, accruing a faithful and ever-increasing body of collectors.

Awash with bright, natural light and imbued with the exuberance of her young subjects, Dianne’s affectionate, nostalgic scenes of children at play are a delight to behold. With deft, flickering brushstrokes, Dianne's subjects and their surroundings are brought to sparkling life. Owing to the artist’s playful use of antique costumes and picturesque landscapes, her work embodies a timeless quality and universal appeal.

Spending her later years in Exeter with her artist husband, Dianne continued to exhibit around the world, having previously shown at various prestigious institutes, including The Royal Society of Portrait Painters and The Pastel Society, London.
